I started thinking about writing a blog to document the process we’re going through to bring our “new” house into modern times and make it a home. We have so many plans I thought it would be neat to document the journey. It was intended to be mostly for our own use. Then we started getting requests for pictures and stories of the things we were doing around the house from friends and family. The funny thing is, I am not really a social media kind of gal. So, bear with me if you are more of a sharer than I am and wonder why I only have one picture of something when you want to see ten. The internet is a strange place and I am easing into this. Also, I’m not a professional photographer so it while I will put some effort into it, I can’t guarantee my photos will be magazine quality. As a working mom with a house to renovate, I don’t have time to get that fancy with a skill that doesn’t come naturally to me.
Our journey from starter home to forever home started about four years ago in said starter home. The house was just a bit too small. We couldn’t have more than two people over without it seeming like you were squeezing by people just to walk around. But we built that house. It was our first house together. And we brought our first baby home to that house. It was a good one. I’ll always remember sitting in the family room rocking my little one (always upright because he had reflux) and playing with him on that floor as I encouraged him to enjoy the tummy time he hated.
But alas, all good things must come to an end in order to make room for more good things. Now we have more space than we need and a lot of work to do, but as that baby approaches toddlerhood there is no holding still. Not a space on our floor isn’t holding toys or some piece of baby equipment. The dog feels regulated to a corner. It’s time.
We knew we were buying our second house for the bones not necessarily its beauty. Before we had even signed papers I had started a list of to-dos. My other half was reasonably dismayed that it took up an entire page. However, with his own list taking up half of another page, we resigned ourselves to the fact that we would be renovating for the next several years in order to make it what we wanted. And, within a couple of weeks of moving in, we had started our first project. Stories and pictures to come!
Update: We have since expanded to include sharing some information on some of our travels as well, now that we’re able to take time and resources for things beyond renovating the house. We try to share some tips in case you are also considering some of the locations and/or attractions. Enjoy!
